Karmic Connections and Extraordinary Relationships

Have you ever met someone you recognized even though it is your first time meeting? There’s a cosmic chemistry, a sixth sense magnetism that seems to pull you towards one another. Is this person a soul mate or a karmic connection? Time usually tells. Are you still with this person? Does he or she still feel like your best friend and lover mixed into one? Then simplistic as it sounds, I suspect you’ve found your soul mate. If the relationship was short lived intense though extraordinary, maybe your souls reconnected to clear some unfinished business from a former life.

Had I not had an unusual and out of ordinary relationship like this, I might not have sought alternative beliefs systems and opened my consciousness to concepts like reincarnation, past life connections, soul mates and karma.

The word “karma” is used loosely now days when something unfortunate or something lucky comes our way. How often have you heard? “It’s must be my karma”…

But karma is not a system of rewards and punishments. In religions like Hinduism and Buddhism karma starts the soul’s initiation on earth and accumulates over life times. The individual soul is reborn many times until the karmic balance is cleared. When this happens the soul ceases to be reborn. Reaching enlightenment it merges with the universal consciousness, the oneness.

Each lifetime becomes another opportunity to rectify wrongful deeds in relationships with souls we’ve spent time with before. The roles are not necessarily the same each time around. A mother in one life might be a daughter in the next a woman might next be born as a man. Regardless, souls recognize each other and respond unconsciously aware of their karmic connection.  Humans have the opportunity to speed up spiritual progress by practicing good karma; mindful thought and action in the present life.

It feels like life times ago even in this present life; a lifetime before I married, another lifetime before children, a third before leaving New York, and the lifetime ago when I knew a man whom I called Red. I hope by sharing my story you will gain insight and support in understanding the world beyond reason detached from emotions; the spiritual world.

We met through mutual friends who called a group of people together to work on an animation project. There was a deadline to meet. All night we sat coloring individual film cells. But I had no sense of that time because I was sitting next to Red talking. There was an inexplicable unconscious familiarity between us and euphoria.

We parted that morning and didn’t see each other again for months, but I had this certainty that we would meet again. I remember asking my friend Laura how Red was doing and if he was dating someone. And when she answered “Yes, I think he is,” I smiled and said, “Well he is with the wrong woman. He is supposed to be with me!”

This confidence especially about a man was very out of character. But I just knew it was a matter of time before fate would bring us back together. And that’s what happened.

One night I agreed to go to a party with Laura and her husband. I wasn’t overly enthusiastic because partying wasn’t my thing but it was a potluck in a lovely brownstone and I wanted to meet some of Laura’s artist friends. We stayed for a few hours and just as we gathered our coats to leave Red arrived. He looked directly at me and then quickly maneuvered through the crowd. “Wait you can’t leave yet. I came to meet you. Can I get your phone number before you leave?”

Part of me was taken a back and the other part unmoved. “Sure” I said giving it to him. “Did you tell Red I wanted to meet him?” I asked my friends. Both of them were as surprised as I was to see Red assuring me they had not said a word. Neither knew that Red was invited to this gathering because it was a different circle of friends.

Red called a few days later and invited me to dinner in the city.

We ate and went to a playground where we talked for awhile. I was doing my NLP training and working at a hospital in the South Bronx and he was working in the film industry. As he walked me to the subway Red bent down and picked up an acorn. “If you ever need me hold this acorn and think of me. I will hear you and come”…

I can’t remember the content of our conversation. I am sure I spoke about Neuro-Linguistic Programming and my interest in this field. And by then I had found Janet and Alice whom I wrote about in “Tales of Telepathy” an earlier post. Only my close friends knew the extent to which I was intuitive. This was long before I publically acknowledged and worked openly using my psychic abilities. Words were not necessary. Red already knew.

Each time we got together time stopped. I truly have not laughed or loved this way before or since. But the more time we spent together the more it became apparent that Red was drinking too much and I discovered he was using drugs. Much as I tried to persuade and dissuade him you know as I did deep down, that it was fruitless… And Red started to pull away.

New Year’s Eve was coming and plans were left indefinite until a few days before. I knew something was off but I wasn’t ready to face this knowing. As soon as we got to the party, Red disappeared. It was crowded loud and smoky. I walked around making small talk feeling belittled. And from the corner of my eye I caught a glimpse of him with another woman. At some point in the evening he caught up with me and we remained together afterwards. We returned to his apartment and I saw a pair of women’s shoes tucked under his desk chair. When I asked he said they belonged to a friend.

I slept on the floor that evening…and left early the next day. He didn’t call for week. In the meantime I pleaded with my friend to tell me what she knew. “We went to another party this week and I saw him with another woman” she told me reluctantly. “The woman he was with on New Year’s eve”? “Yes” she said.

Fury rose up in me a primal self defending force; the female warrior on the rampage to defend the ego’s honor. I drove to his apartment unannounced. When he opened the door I said “The only thing you haven’t done is spit in my face, and I wouldn’t put that past you.” I collected my belongings and out of nowhere Red said, “Am I going to die?”

What would make him ask me this? Who was I to him? What did he see in me; a reflection of himself?

“All I know is that you are destroying your self and I can’t stop you.” I answered…

The relationship ended obviously and our lives went on but there was still emotional residue and apparently a psychic telepathic hold. More than a year later I found the acorn Red had given me on our first date. I held it that night before I went to sleep and prayed out loud asking God to help me release the twisted emotional hold I had with Red. “Help me to let go. Let me understand and accept the personal lessons this experience brought to me, and let me done. And if you can hear me Red I am letting go now.”

In the wee hours of the morning my apartment buzzer rang. Without pressing the intercom to see who it was I threw on my bathrobe and went down the stairs to the lobby. I already knew. Behind the glass doors Red stood waiting. When I opened them he said, “I heard you”… Twenty five years later it is still mind boggling …

We spoke for many hours and slept side by side. When we awoke Red told me he was engaged to be married… There was closure and there was inner peace.

No matter how powerful the connection spiritual, psychic, karmic, or emotional we cannot manipulate destiny and the lives of others. We can share our lives but we can only have mastery of our own.
